This course is for adults who are interested in learning core counselling skills and exploring whether a career in counselling or a helping profession might be right for them. It is also suitable for those working in support roles, education, health, or social care who want to improve how they communicate and support others.

  • Learn and practise core counselling skills such as active listening, empathy, and reflection
  • Develop self-awareness and understanding of how your values and experiences influence your communication
  • Explore the boundaries and ethical responsibilities of a helping role
  • Work effectively with others in a safe and respectful learning group
  • Lay the foundations for progression to Level 3 Counselling or other helping professions

The course will include:

  • Using Counselling Skills
  • Introduction to Counselling Skills Theories
  • Diversity and Ethics in the Use of Counselling Skills
  • Personal Development in Counselling Skills

Applicants should have basic written and spoken English skills and an interest in personal development. More importantly, learners must be emotionally ready to take part in a course that involves self-reflection and personal sharing. You will be expected to talk about your own experiences and how they have shaped you. Because of the personal nature of the course, you cannot attend with someone you know, including friends, family, or colleagues. This helps to maintain confidentiality and create a safe space where all learners can fully engage in the process.

Is This the Right Course for Me at This Time?

This Fast Track programme is designed for learners who are comfortable with an intensive pace of study. It includes regular assignment deadlines and requires a consistent commitment to independent study, reading and skills practice between sessions. It is best suited to those who can dedicate the necessary time each week to meet the demands of an accelerated learning experience.

This course is a learning environment, not a therapy group. While you will be encouraged to reflect on your own life experiences and how these have shaped your values, beliefs, and behaviours, the primary focus is on developing counselling skills—not on receiving emotional support. You will be expected to talk about yourself, work closely with others, and give and receive constructive feedback.

If you are currently receiving support for your mental health—such as counselling, therapy, or medication—this does not exclude you from joining. However, it is important to think carefully about whether this is the right time for you to take part in a course that requires emotional openness and self-exploration. It may be necessary to consult with your service provider, GP, counsellor or therapist on whether the course is right for you.  If the course team feels that additional emotional support may be needed during the course, you may be encouraged to seek help from a qualified counsellor outside of the course.

We recommend speaking to your tutor or support team if you are unsure about your readiness. It’s important that you feel in a stable enough place emotionally to participate fully, while also maintaining your own wellbeing.

Learners may take part in skills practice sessions, peer discussions, and activities that build confidence, emotional awareness, and self-reflection. These enrichment opportunities help learners grow both personally and professionally. Students visit the FabLab to access innovative technology to support their learning.

Assessment is based on a mix of written assignments, weekly reflective journals, tutor observations, and practical skills demonstrations. There are no formal exams, but you will need to complete a portfolio of evidence showing your progress and understanding.

This course prepares learners for the Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Skills, which deepens understanding of counselling theory and practice.

Students can also progress onto Level 2 Award in mentoring or Level 2 Award in Helping Skills course.  These can support progression to mentoring roles, helping roles, health and social care qualifications, or volunteer positions where strong interpersonal skills are essential.
