This qualification is ideal for individuals who want to develop their communication and helping skills, whether for personal development, employment, volunteering or future study.

It is particularly suited to learners who have completed a Level 1 Interpersonal Skills qualification and would like to build their confidence before progressing to counselling or mentoring qualifications. It is also suitable for those working in supportive roles who want to communicate more effectively and understand the principles of helping relationships.

This course provides an excellent stepping stone to the NCFE Level 2 Award in Mentoring, the NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills, or other qualifications within the helping professions.

During this course learners will:

  • Develop effective helping and communication skills.
  • Learn the principles of active listening and empathy.
  • Understand the purpose and boundaries of helping relationships.
  • Explore self-awareness and reflective practice.
  • Build confidence when supporting others appropriately.
  • Develop skills that can be applied in both personal and professional settings.

Over the course learners will explore topics including:

  • Understanding Helping Relationships.
  • The Role of the Helper.
  • Effective Communication and Active Listening Skills.
  • Developing Empathy and Self-Awareness.
  • Maintaining Professional Boundaries.
  • Reflective Practice and Personal Development.
  • Applying Helping Skills in Everyday and Professional Contexts.

Learners should ideally have completed a Level 1 qualification in Interpersonal Skills or a related subject, or be able to demonstrate a good understanding of communication and self-awareness.
A good standard of written and spoken English is recommended as the course involves written assignments, discussion and reflective learning.

Learners will have opportunities to participate in:

  • Practical helping skills activities and role plays.
  • Communication workshops.
  • Reflective learning groups.
  • Virtual Reality communication scenarios.
  • Guest speakers from counselling, mentoring and other helping professions.

Assessment is portfolio-based and includes written assignments, practical activities, skills demonstrations, group work and reflective journals. Learners will receive regular feedback and guidance throughout the course to support successful completion.
There are no formal examinations.

After successfully completing this qualification, learners may progress to:

  • NCFE Level 2 Award in Mentoring
  • NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills
  • NCFE Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Skills
  • Level 3 Award in Education and Training (where appropriate)
  • Voluntary helping, mentoring or peer-support roles
  • Further study within counselling, education, mentoring or coaching

For learners who have completed the Level 1 Award in Interpersonal Skills, this qualification provides an excellent bridge into counselling training by strengthening the communication skills, self-awareness and reflective practice expected of counselling students.
