ESOL Entry 1 (Beginner)

Description:
This course is for adults who are just starting to learn English. You will learn basic words and phrases for everyday life, such as introducing yourself, shopping, and asking for help. You will practice listening, speaking, reading, and writing in English.

You will learn how to:

  • Say your name, address, and phone number
  • Talk about your family and daily activities
  • Read signs and simple forms
  • Write short sentences

None. However, a short assessment and a discussion with a teacher are required to determine learner level.

Throughout the year, we take great pride in providing a diverse range of enrichment activities. These include:

  • Our One World event which celebrates different faiths and cultures
  • Residential trips
  • Day excursions to various UK cities
  • Theatre outings
  • Visits to local museums
  • Guest speakers covering topics like Sexual Health, Sports, Well-being, Finances, Safety and Volunteering.

This course is formally assessed via examinations in three areas: Speaking and Listening, Reading, and Writing. Each part is tested separately, but they all count towards one certificate, the ESOL Skills for Life qualification from Trinity College London. Speaking and Listening are tested through a one-to-one talk with an examiner and a group discussion. Reading and Writing are tested in formal exams. These exams take place three times a year, during December, March/April and June.

Additionally, tutors will assess learners continuously throughout the academic year to best prepare learners for the formal exams.

After successful completion of ESOL Entry 1 learners can progress to ESOL Entry 2 qualification.
