Interested in a career in construction? This practical, hands-on course will introduce you to the essential skills of bricklaying and blockwork. You will learn how to safely use industry-standard tools and materials while building walls, corners and cavity wall structures to professional standards. The course also covers construction health and safety, measuring and setting out, and working accurately from plans and specification

Key learning includes:

  • Understanding construction health and safety, including PPE, risk awareness and safe working practices. 
  • Selecting and using the correct bricklaying tools, equipment and materials. 
  • Measuring, setting out and working accurately from drawings and specifications. 
  • Building half-brick walls, developing skills in bonding, levelling and maintaining accurate joint sizes. 
  • Constructing blockwork walls, including setting out profiles and working to industry tolerances. 
  • Building half-brick return corners, developing skills in plumbing, levelling and corner construction. 
  • Constructing cavity walls using brick and blockwork, including the installation of damp-proof courses (DPCs) and wall ties. 
  • Building one-brick walls and applying finishing techniques to achieve a professional standard. 
  • Maintaining a clean, organised and safe work area throughout practical tasks.
