On this Carpentry & Joinery programme you will learn how to measure, mark out, cut, assemble and install timber products safely and accurately. You will develop practical skills in traditional woodworking joints, fitting doors and timber mouldings, installing locks and constructing timber frames – giving you the essential skills needed for further study or a career in the construction industry.

Key learning includes:

  • Understanding construction health and safety, including PPE, risk awareness and safe working practices. 
  • Selecting and using the correct bricklaying tools, equipment and materials. 
  • Mark out timber components.
  • Work to specified tolerances.
  • Check for square, level, twist and alignment.
  • Follow technical drawings and specifications.
  • Identify timber types and sizes.
  • Select suitable materials for a task.
  • Understand timber preparation and finishing requirements.
  • Work with planed softwood components.

  • Constructing angled halving joints 
  • Constructing bridle joints 
  • Constructing haunched mortice and tenon joints 
  • Constructing stub mortice and tenon joints

This course forms part of an entry to construction pathway. In addition to studying the Level 1, you will also complete a health & safety qualification along and work toward obtaining a CSCS card to help move you closer to local employment opportunities.
